Homeroom time for Grade 6
Homeroom 1/21/2011
Today during homeroom time students were discussing honestly and dishonesty- important concepts relating to our ESLR of Principled.
We discussed some reasons why people are dishonest.
"Fear" was a reason we discussed at length.
We also talked about looking at the short term and long term consequences of dishonesty and lying.
While the short term gain might look attractive to a student when they lie, they may end up with a bigger negative consequence because of it. Students considered examples that fell into this category.
These are important skills for Grade 6 students to learn to help them reason, make good choices and make sense of our world.
Mr Blanck and Mrs Gould did a great job of leading our students today.
Spanish language in action
Students in Spanish class have been practicing their number skills using the game of Battleships.
These videos show how students have to apply what they have learned in theory into a practical application in the fun environment of a game.Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Student of the Semester (Semester 1)
At the end of Semester One and again at the end of Semester Two, Middle School staff vote on who they think is deserving of an award based on a consistent and excellent academic record and positive service attitude at TCIS.
At the final assembly for 2010 we presented these awards... however our recipient for Grade 6 was absent.
It was my privilege today to present...
Rakia received a lovely certificate which contained the following reasons for her award:

RAKIA SEGEV WITH THE STUDENT OF THE SEMESTER.
Rakia received a lovely certificate which contained the following reasons for her award:
She is always thoroughly and consistently organized for class.
Every task she completes is of the highest quality due to her work ethic and inquiring mind.
She communicates her thoughts in a respectful and reflective way, regardless of the task or who she is working with.
She is a positive contributor to classroom discussions.
She is a good thinker and can transfer her knowledge to other situations.
She has the curiosity and love for learning that will serve her well in life.
Her joyful attitude is contagious and she makes our school brighter by being here.

Grade 6 students take to the dancefloor
Grade 6 have started a new unit of Dance in P.E.
In the first short video we get to see students learning and performing "The Nutbush".
A simple dance which relies on beats of 8 for each movement and repetition of these movements.
In the second and third videos, students had to use their understanding of the beat and the timing of movements to create their own "Nutbush Dance".
While I gave directionand correction on some of their movements, some groups persevered with some tricky transitions given the tempo of the music.
While the students made mistakes, they learned a lot about composition of movements and how to pace and time an 8 beat sequence so it fits into the next one.
This is formative work for an upcoming summative task of a similar nature.
Students will continue to work on small tasks such as these to practice important skills.
